SHAH ALAM, Dec 18 (Bernama) -- EGR Tech Sdn Bhd was the only company which applied for Road Transport Department (JPJ) approval on its invention of the usage of hydrogen to reduce petrol or diesel consumption in internal combustion engine.
Transport Minister Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat said this was the only application which the ministry had so far, received.
He said the EGR Tech hydrogen fuel-saving device had yet to be approved by JPJ which was still conducting tests, especially on safety elements in relation to enforcement aspects.
Ong was replying to reporters when asked how many fuel saving devices using hydrogen had been approved by JPJ.
He said this after witnessing the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Sirim Bhd and EGR Tech here today, whereby the former would assist the company to test and certify the newly-invented hydrogen production system for internal combustion engine application.
Meanwhile, Sirim president and chief executive Ir Yahaya Ahmad told reporters that the testing of EGR Tech technology would take some time because certain aspects of the test would be conducted in laboratories in America or Europe.
He said that most of the tests would be conducted on the safety aspects of the device, as well as verify EGR Tech's claims that its technology could help vehicle owners to save fuel cost by 50 per cent, reduce exhaust emission and pollute the environment less.
EGR Tech chief executive officer K. B. Woo said the product was different from other hydrogen fuel savings because it used computer chip to control the amount of hydrogen extracted from the water, especially for safety measures as hydrogen was a volatile gas and could explode.
He said once SIRIM had certified its hydrogen technology, the company would market the product initially for buses and trucks before introducing it for cars.
The company also planned to market the product in Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Taiwan and China.
On the cost of the device, Woo said it would be announced when the product was launched.
